Contacts & Mailing Lists

What is the difference between a list and a segment?

Lists and segments both help you organize contacts, but they work differently. You choose the type when you create it, and it can't be changed afterward.

Static lists

A static list is a saved group of contacts. You decide who should be included by importing contacts into the list, adding selected contacts to it, or using filter rules to add matching contacts once.

Lists work well for defined audiences such as:

  • Your sphere of influence.
  • Past clients.
  • A purchased property list.
  • Homeowners in a particular neighborhood.

Dynamic segments

A segment selects contacts according to rules you set. You could create a segment for contacts in a certain city or clients with an anniversary coming up.

Segments are always dynamic. Contacts are checked against the rules each time the segment is used, so it always includes your most current matches. If you want an audience that doesn't change, create a static list instead.
